About Me

Picture of Mav Schmidt

My name is Mav Schmidt (they/them) and I am rising junior (Class of ’24) at Gettysburg College. I am a Sociology major with Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Peace and Justice Studies minors. I am interested in social justice work after graduation, and some of my hobbies include poetry, dance, and the outdoors.

Reason for this Project

This project was created for and during the Gettysburg College Musselman Library Fortenbaugh Digital Humanities Fellowship. Fellows had 8 weeks to create a digital project using the Library’s Special Collections and College Archives in some way. I discovered collections of U.S. government-issued World War I and II propaganda posters, as well as political cartoons from the U.S. Civil War. I was immediately interested in learning more about the propaganda and analyzing it according to the social and political climate at the time of each war.

The Cohort

I worked on this project with the guidance of R.C. Miessler (he/him), the Systems Librarian and Digital Initiatives Librarian at Musselman Library, coordinator of the Library’s Digital Humanities initiatives, and my Librarian buddy for the Fellowship.

Mary Elmquist (they/she), the Scholarly Communications Librarian, and Kevin Moore (he/him), the Research, Instruction, and Online Learning Librarian at Musselman Library and the librarian liaison to Gettysburg College’s Biology and Psychology departments, facilitated the program with R.C.

During the Fellowship I worked with Anali Matthew (Class of ’23) and Alyssa Gruneberg (Class of ’24). Together, we learned about digital humanities and digital tools, and developed our individual projects.

Digital Humanities

One of the main goals of the Fellowship was to learn about digital humanities. The following values of digital humanities, outlined by Lisa Spiro, guided my project: diversity, collaboration, collegiality and connectedness, experimentation, and openness.
