Role of Economics

Foreign Affairs

Many political cartoons from the Civil War illustrate attitudes regarding foreign affairs. They express a desire to recruit support from other countries, but a worry that the support will go to the other side instead.

Cartoons also warned against unnecessary debates (like slavery, as seen on the “Race Thinking” page) so that other countries wouldn’t take advantage of the Union/Confederacy’s vulnerable state.

The State of the Confederacy- Through the Eyes of the Union

The cartoon below is a pro-Union expression of the economic state of the Confederacy. After the Confederate states seceded from the Union, they had much difficulty establishing a stable economy. The following cartoon mocks the Confederacy for this, all while being insensitive toward the Black people affected by the economic situation.
